Shrewsbury
‘My Desolate Diocese’
Peter Phillips

The history of the formation of the Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury. Although the diocese of Shrewsbury was created only in 1850 with the restoration of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy in England and Wales, the diocese is shaped by, and has its roots deep in, its historical past. For this reason, this study of the diocese of Shrewsbury traces the Catholic community from the late Tudor period as it survived the confusion of the Reformation and continued through the trials of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries before emerging in strength once more in the nineteenth century.
